THE SCHOOL BOARD VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO APPROVE CHESAPEAKE SCHOOL REZONING BOTH OPTION 1 & OPTION 4.

The school board voted unanimously to approve both Option 1 & Option 4 to rezone Chesapeake Schools at their meeting on October 30, 2017.   The changes will take effect at the start of the school year in September 2018.

They will allow all current high school students to continue at their current schools if they provide their own transportation. This includes current Freshman, Sophomores & Juniors, but it does not include current 8th grade students.

Chesapeake School Board unanimously voted for rezoning Chesapeake schools using Option 1 & Option 4.

Option 1 will also rezone the following Hugo Owens Middle School neighborhoods to Deep Creek Middle School: Mill Stone West, Old Mill Landing, Hillside Landing, Martindale, Kentucky Forest, Sherman Oaks, Millers Run, Westonia, Sherborne Manor at Olde Mill Run (formerly Brooks Run), Olde Mill Run, Elmwood Landing, Elmwood Landing West, Mill Creek Apartments, Mill Creek, Culpepper Landing, and Cottage Trails at Culpepper Landing.

Option 1 will rezone the following Hickory Middle School neighborhoods to Hugo Owens Middle School: Bareback Estates, Equestrian Estates, West Road Estates, The Estates at Grassfield Meadows, Dominion Meadows, Shillelagh Estates, Jubilee Acres, Shillelagh Farms, Foxwood North, Gertie, Grainfields Trace, Glencoe Crossing, Wild Horse Ridge, Curling Acres, Cornland, and West Landing Estates.

Option 4 will also rezone the Bells Mill area from Great Bridge Middle School to Hugo A. Owens Middle School, but will keep these same neighborhoods as zoned currently for Grassfield High School: Island Estates, Falls Creek, Inland Colony, Ash Hill Estates, Country Club Meadows, Lockhaven Estates, Sherwood Forest, Cedarwood Condos, Edward & Evelyn Estates, Watermill Cove, Breezewood Landing, Harbour Landing, Bells Mill Estates, Harbor Landing & Seabrooke Landing.

Option 4 will rezone the current Hickory Middle School and Hickory High School neighborhoods to Great Bridge Middle and Great Bridge High School: Glasser Landing, Kensington Chase, Hillwell Manor, Savanna Heights, Sweetbay Plantation, Windlesham Plantation, Alexis Forest, Sharon Estates, Julie Acres, Battlewood Meadows, Bella Manor, Berkshire Forest & Viridian Reserve at Hickory.

Chesapeake Public Schools are currently considering four options for school rezoning possibilities.  The changes voted upon by the Chesapeake School Board would take effect for the 2018- 2019 school year.

Option 1 – Effective Fall 2018

Chesapeake School Rezoning Option 1    

Option 1 General Description:
From Hickory Middle School to Hugo Owens Middle School: Reassign the portion of the Grassfield Elementary School zone currently feeding Hickory Middle School to Hugo Owens Middle School. Specifically, the area is south of Rt. 17 Dominion Boulevard South, extending west to the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, and extending south to the North Carolina – Virginia state line. The eastern boundary extends to, and includes, Shillelagh Road and the 3848-4045 addresses of Bunch Walnuts Road southward to the state line. The 2709-3842 address section of Bunch Walnuts Road is not included. This area includes, but is not limited to, the following communities:

Bareback Estates, Equestrian Estates, West Road Estates, The Estates at Grassfield Meadows, Dominion Meadows, Shillelagh Estates, Jubilee Acres, Shillelagh Farms, Foxwood North, Gertie, Grainfields Trace, Glencoe Crossing, Wild Horse Ridge, Curling Acres, Cornland, and West Landing Estates.

From Hugo Owens Middle School to Deep Creek Middle School: Reassign the portion of the attendance zone bounded to the north by a portion of Galberry Road (odd range 2801-3199), extending west to the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (including Cookes Mill Road), to the south by the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and by George Washington Highway North and the Dismal Swamp Canal to the east. This area includes, but is not limited to, the following communities:

Mill Stone West, Old Mill Landing, Hillside Landing, Martindale, Kentucky Forest, Sherman Oaks, Millers Run, Westonia, Sherborne Manor at Olde Mill Run (formerly Brooks Run), Olde Mill Run, Elmwood Landing, Elmwood Landing West, Mill Creek Apartments, Mill Creek, Culpepper Landing, and Cottage Trails at Culpepper Landing.

 

Option 2 – School Board Voted Against

Reassign portions of Hickory Middle School and Hickory High School to
Great Bridge Middle School and Great Bridge High School.

From Hickory Middle/Hickory High Schools to Great Bridge Middle/Great Bridge High Schools:

Reassign the portion of the attendance zone from Berkshire Forest, Bella Manor, and Viridian Reserve at Hickory communities on the west, eastward to Cooper’s Ditch and Hillwell Road, and south to include the Battlewood Meadows community. This area includes, but is not limited to, the following communities:

Glasser Landing, Kensington Chase, Savanna Heights, Hillwell Manor, Madison Garden Estates, Sweetbay Plantation, Windlesham Plantation, Alexis Forest, White Egret Cove, Sharon Estates, Julie Acres, Battlewood Meadows, Berkshire Forest, Bella Manor, and Viridian Reserve at Hickory.

Option 3 – School board voted against

Reassign a portion of Grassfield High School to Great Bridge High School.

Option 3 Rezoning

General Description:
From Grassfield High School to Great Bridge High School:
Reassign the portion of the attendance zone bounded to the north by the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, to the south by Cedar Road, to the east by Bells Mill Creek, and to the west by Rt. 17 Dominion Boulevard South. This area includes, but is not limited to, the following communities:

Island Estates, Inland Colony, Falls Creek, Country Club Meadows, Country Club Meadows South, Sherwood Forest, Lochaven Estates, Ash Hill Estates, Watsons Glen, Hastings Place, Watermill Cove at Watsons Glen, Breezewood Landing, Cedarwood South, Cedarwood, Bells Mill Estates, Harbor Landing, Seabrooke Landing, Edward and Evelyn Estates, Cedarwood Condominiums, and Cedarwood II Condominiums.

Option 4 – EFFECTIVE FALL 2018

Option 4 High School

Neighborhoods that are currently zoned for Hickory Middle School and Hickory High School will be rezoned to Great Bridge Middle and Great Bridge High School include Glasser Landing, Kensington Chase, Hillwell Manor, Savanna Heights, Sweetbay Plantation,Windlesham Plantation, Alexis Forest, Sharon Estates, Julie Acres, Battlewood Meadows, Bella Manor, Berkshire Forest & Viridian Reserve at Hickory.

Option 4 will also rezone the Bells Mill area from Great Bridge Middle School to Hugo A. Owens Middle School, but will keep these same neighborhoods as zoned currently for Grassfield High School: Island Estates, Falls Creek, Inland Colony, Ash Hill Estates, Country Club Meadows, Lockhaven Estates, Sherwood Forest, Cedarwood Condos, Edward & Evelyn Estates, Watermill Cove, Breezewood Landing, Harbour Landing, Bells Mill Estates, Harbor Landing & Seabrooke Landing.

The school board may also choose a combination of any of the plans also.  There were several public meetings held in October to allow for citizen input.  This is the final opportunity to voice your opinion before the school board votes on a plan.

Also of note is that our long time superintendent of Chesapeake Schools has announced his resignation.

Budget skills are critical for the new superintendent.
