About Jennifer Barnes
Jennifer Barnes is a mother to six children all in the Chesapeake public school system. She understands the challenges of special needs children as three of her own have Individual Education Plans IEPs. She strongly believes in order to have safe safe schools that all children, especially special needs children, should not be allowed to fall through the cracks, but instead be allotted all services and accommodations needed in order to be successful. Her husband, Trent is active duty Naval Officer currently stationed out of Norfolk.
Jennifer’s holds several degrees including a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and Masters in Organizational Management. She is a former probation officer, sexual assault and domestic violence therapist, and a child protective services social worker. Jennifer and her husband Trent have fostered over 30 children through the state foster care system, and adopted four of those children. She has a strong passion for ensuring the safety and welfare of all children.
In addition Jennifer has a certified USDA small farm in Chesapeake that has been selling at the local Chesapeake Farmer’s Market for several years. She started and founded the Chesapeake Small Farmers Coalition out of a need to correct live stock zoning ordinances, land rights and farming rights in Chesapeake. After working diligently for the past year, Jennifer Barnes and the Chesapeake Small Farmers Coalition was able to collaborate with city council, city attorneys, city planning department, farm bureau and the Agriculture Advisory Board to successfully revise 1200 pages of zoning laws.
